Studio-computer buying guide

Best Desktop Computers for Music Production

Buy for the software and connection map you actually have. The 16GB/512GB M4 Mac mini is the compact macOS entry; the 24GB M4 Pro model adds memory and Thunderbolt 5; the 36GB M4 Max Mac Studio is the fixed-memory Mac lane with more built-in I/O; and HP's 64GB Z2 Tower is the Windows workstation with internal expansion slots.

We checked exact current configurations, official port and support documents, DAW requirements and retailer popularity. We did not run sessions, benchmarks or latency tests. Project size, plug-ins, drivers and buffer settings change results, so no configuration here guarantees a track count or glitch-free recording.

Configurations, availability and compatibility checked .

Do not buy yet if one required plug-in, interface driver, control app or license manager is not supported on the intended OS and processor.

Refresh warning: desktop SKUs and prices move quickly. Match the model number, memory and SSD at checkout; do not rely on a family name alone.

Choose the operating system before the processor

Compact Logic or macOS setup

Choose the Mac mini M4, 16GB/512GB, MU9E3LL/A only after every interface and plug-in passes an Apple-silicon and current-macOS check. Memory and internal storage cannot be upgraded later.

Mac with more fixed memory

The Mac mini M4 Pro, 24GB/512GB, MCX44LL/A is the middle lane when 24GB is an explicit requirement or Thunderbolt 5 is needed. It is not a default upsell.

Mac with more built-in ports

The Mac Studio M4 Max, 36GB/512GB, MU963LL/A adds front SDXC, rear USB-A, 10Gb Ethernet and four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports. Confirm that 512GB internal storage is enough or budget external storage.

Windows tower and PCIe path

The current HP Z2 Tower G1i, BP8L8UA#ABA supplies Windows 11 Pro, 64GB, 1TB and an RTX 2000 Ada GPU. Its slots are useful, but an audio-only buyer may be paying for graphics hardware the studio does not need.

Translate the configuration sheet

DAW

Meaning: digital audio workstation, the software used to record, edit and mix.

Why it matters: Logic Pro is Mac-only; other DAWs publish separate OS and processor requirements.

Check: the current requirement page for the exact DAW version.

Do not assume: a powerful computer supports every DAW release.

Apple silicon

Meaning: Apple's M-series processor architecture.

Why it matters: older plug-ins and utilities may require updates or Rosetta translation.

Check: native or supported status for each plug-in, driver and license tool.

Do not assume: macOS compatibility automatically means native Apple-silicon compatibility.

Unified memory

Meaning: memory shared by the CPU and GPU on these Macs.

Why it matters: it is fixed at purchase.

Check: current memory use with representative projects before choosing 16, 24 or 36GB.

Do not assume: an external drive can replace insufficient memory.

Thunderbolt

Meaning: a high-bandwidth connection carried through USB-C-shaped ports.

Why it matters: some interfaces, docks and storage require Thunderbolt rather than ordinary USB-C.

Check: device protocol, cable and port generation separately.

Do not assume: every USB-C socket or cable is Thunderbolt.

ASIO and Core Audio

Meaning: the common low-level audio paths used by Windows and macOS respectively.

Why it matters: an interface may need a current vendor ASIO driver on Windows, while macOS devices may be class-compliant or need a driver.

Check: the interface maker's exact OS support.

Do not assume: a physical USB connection proves recording-software support.

PCIe slot

Meaning: an internal tower connector for expansion cards.

Why it matters: some DSP, HDX, network and storage workflows use cards unavailable to sealed compact Macs.

Check: slot size, lane allocation, power, clearance and vendor qualification.

Do not assume: an empty slot accepts every card.

Current exact configurations

These are complete configurations, not interchangeable family names. Ports are manufacturer-published; upgrade statements distinguish internal user-serviceable parts from external expansion.

Why these four studio computers made the cut

We defined four studio constraints, then matched exact configurations rather than processor families. Manufacturer documents govern configuration, ports and support; large retailer records supply observable owner activity. Popularity never substitutes for compatibility or measured performance.

Build a compatibility ledger before checkout

  1. Freeze the intended OS. Write the exact supported macOS or Windows release beside the DAW version; postpone an OS upgrade if the studio vendors have not qualified it.
  2. List every required dependency. Include the interface driver/control panel, plug-ins, sample managers, license managers, MIDI utilities and any PCIe hardware.
  3. Mark each one supported, replaceable or blocking. A single blocking driver can outweigh every processor specification.
  4. Draw the port map. Assign interface, iLok, controllers, backup, sample drive and display. Add a powered hub or dock only where its maker supports the intended devices.
  5. Measure real storage. Add current projects, sample libraries and free working space. Keep backup capacity separate from working storage.

Recommendations by studio constraint

Compact macOS entry

Apple Mac mini M4, 16GB / 512GB (MU9E3LL/A)

Choose this exact US configuration for a small macOS or Logic setup whose measured memory use fits 16GB and whose complete toolchain supports Apple silicon.

  • Best Buy showed the current 512GB SKU orderable with 326 reviews.
  • Three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports leave the two front USB-C ports accessible.

Drawback: memory and internal storage are fixed, and 512GB can disappear quickly under sample libraries.

Avoid if: a required Windows-only tool, PCIe card or unsupported legacy plug-in remains.

Alternative: M4 Pro 24GB when measured memory demand exceeds this lane.

What to verify: the 512GB `MU9E3LL/A` configuration, not an older 256GB listing, and every current driver.

24GB Mac / Thunderbolt 5

Apple Mac mini M4 Pro, 24GB / 512GB (MCX44LL/A)

Choose it when 24GB unified memory or a verified Thunderbolt 5 device is a stated requirement, while the compact Mac mini format still fits the studio.

  • Best Buy showed 118 reviews for the exact model.
  • Official specification supplies three rear Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Drawback: the SSD remains 512GB and neither it nor memory is user-upgradable.

Avoid if: the base M4's memory and Thunderbolt 4 already cover the written ledger.

Alternative: base M4 16GB/512GB; Mac Studio for more fixed memory and built-in I/O.

What to verify: Apple lists the exact 24GB/512GB configuration; use Best Buy only as the 118-review popularity record.

More fixed Mac memory and I/O

Apple Mac Studio M4 Max, 36GB / 512GB (MU963LL/A)

This exact base M4 Max configuration is the Mac lane for a buyer who has already justified 36GB and values SDXC, USB-A, four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports and 10Gb Ethernet.

  • B&H's exact MU963LL/A page recorded 54 reviews.
  • More built-in connector types can reduce adapter dependence.

Drawback: 512GB is modest beside large libraries, while internal memory and SSD are fixed.

Avoid if: the port map and memory measurement fit a Mac mini, or a PCIe card is mandatory.

Alternative: M4 Pro Mac mini; HP Z2 for internal card expansion.

What to verify: Apple supplies the exact current configuration; use B&H only as the 54-review popularity record.

Windows tower / PCIe path

HP Z2 Tower G1i, 64GB / 1TB (BP8L8UA#ABA)

Choose this exact Windows 11 Pro tower when 64GB, internal slots or a qualified Windows-only workflow is necessary and its discrete workstation GPU also serves a written need.

  • HP listed the exact SKU in its current in-stock tower category; the Z2 G1i family showed 22 reviews.
  • Official documents expose memory, M.2 and PCIe expansion paths.

Drawback: the RTX 2000 Ada and workstation pricing may add substantial cost without improving an audio-only workflow.

Avoid if: the required card is unqualified, or a lower-cost tower satisfies the same memory, port and expansion ledger.

Alternative: a lower-cost ready-to-ship tower with the required parts already installed, or external storage on a compact computer.

What to verify: `BP8L8UA#ABA`, current in-stock status, exact card fit, networking and audio-vendor Windows 11 support.

Budget the complete working system

Price the computer together with the required display, keyboard, interface adapters, powered hub or dock, working sample drive, backup drive and any replacement software. Treat external SSD speed claims as irrelevant until the enclosure, cable, port protocol and sustained workload all match. For the HP, get the exact card, slot, power and cable plan in writing; a family datasheet is not proof that every expansion combination works in the selected SKU.

Compatibility boundary: Ableton lists Live 12 support across current Windows and macOS ranges, while Avid qualifies specific Pro Tools and OS combinations and notes known issues. Logic Pro requires macOS and current releases require macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later. Always use the vendor page for the exact release you intend to install.

Final checkout verification

Match the cart to the exact model number, memory, SSD and operating system shown here. Then re-open the DAW, plug-in, interface and license-manager support pages, confirm every physical connection in the port map, and obtain written expansion-part details for the HP. Recheck retailer stock and warranty terms on the purchase date.
