Aubert Etude No.5 is the most documented mainstream blank; Teller Fitted reduces some starting work but is not drop-in; Despiau V10/No.10 A leaves broad carving latitude; Aubert de Luxe #81 belongs on a fitter's explicit premium-stock request.
We checked current Thomann, Shar and Fiddlershop records on . We did not fit, play or compare these bridges. The finished result depends on the individual violin and trained fitter.
Do not remove the old bridge to test a blank. A retail 4/4 label does not settle foot contact, finished height, crown, string spacing or thickness.
Ask for one total quote: exact stock, assessment, fitting labor, strings if needed, follow-up, old-part return, warranty responsibility and completion date.

Teller Fitted still needs instrument-specific adjustment by a professional.
A-grade or de Luxe stock cannot promise a preferred sound.

Bridge blank
A maple starting piece whose feet, top and thickness remain to be fitted.
Every included product still needs individual professional work.
Put the exact blank and fitting labor on separate quote lines.
A recognizable bridge shape does not mean ready to stand under strings.
Fitted bridge
Retail wording for stock with some openings, crown or string grooves already shaped.
Teller's current pages still require final adjustment to the violin.
Ask which surfaces and measurements remain unfinished.
“Fitted” does not mean fitted to your instrument.
Foot width
The stated span associated with the blank's two feet; stores may report inner, outer or leg width.
Similar-looking numbers can describe different points.
Have the fitter name the required convention and exact product.
41.5 and 42 mm are not buyer-selected quality scores.
Crown
The curved top edge that establishes the string arc after fitting.
It interacts with the fingerboard and intended string heights.
Leave its final geometry to the fitter.
A pre-cut crown is not automatically correct.
Heart and kidneys
The central and side openings in traditional bridge geometry.
Models arrive with different amounts of opening and carving.
Use them to identify the requested model, not as a DIY trimming map.
Larger openings are not a consumer quality ranking.
A-grade / three-tree
Despiau's selected top wood grade in the reviewed V10 listing.
It describes the stock selection before fitting.
Pay for it only when the fitter can explain why it suits the job.
It cannot guarantee sound, strength or lifespan on an unknown violin.
Untreated
Bridge stock sold without the hardening/treatment named on some alternatives.
Aubert de Luxe #81 is specifically sold in this state.
Confirm that untreated stock is the fitter's intentional choice.
Untreated is neither universally better nor unfinished by mistake.

Compare processing level before price or grade

Selection boundary
Four blanks earned a lane; no blank earned a sound verdict
A product needed exact current identity, a major specialist listing, a clear processing level and a defensible shop conversation. Thomann anchors European popularity and dimensions. Shar and Fiddlershop provide practical US stock and explicit installation boundaries. Sweetwater was checked but does not provide a comparable violin-bridge parts range.
We excluded adjustable-foot bridges from the shortlist. Fiddlershop describes its Aubert self-adjusting model as directly installable, while Shar still recommends luthier adjustment for its related adjustable bridge and current reviews report variable outcomes. That is too conflicted for a proxy buyer seeking a reliable fit path. Ebony-inlay and fractional products also require a diagnosis or geometry decision beyond their retail labels.

Fitter wants a mainstream treated full blank
Aubert Etude No.5 4/4
This has the clearest market proof: exact 40 mm height and 41.5 mm outer spacing, current Thomann stock, 59 ratings and more than 5,000 reported sales. It remains raw stock requiring complete fitting.
Avoid if: no fitter has confirmed that this blank suits the violin and work plan.
Alternative: a fitter-supplied equivalent or Teller pre-shaped stock when deliberately chosen.
Support: live Thomann exact page, brand sales record, origin and warranty statement.
Fitter wants partly pre-shaped economy stock
Teller Fitted 4/4
Shar B2F44 and Fiddlershop VB10 are current US lanes for a pre-shaped Teller bridge. Openings, crown and grooves reduce starting work, but Fiddlershop still says the feet and bridge require professional adjustment.
Avoid if: “cut to fit average violin” is being treated as instrument-specific fit.
Alternative: Aubert Etude full blank or the exact stock your fitter routinely uses.

Fitter requests A-grade stock and carving latitude
Despiau V10 / No.10 A 4/4
The Fiddlershop V10 A leaves the arch and ears largely uncarved at 41.5 mm, while Thomann's No.10 A states 42 mm and about 41 mm height. Both are current, but the exact regional item belongs on the quote.
Avoid if: grade is the only explanation or the seller variant is unspecified.
Alternative: Aubert Etude for a simpler documented mainstream blank.

Fitter explicitly requests untreated premium French stock
Aubert de Luxe #81 Untreated 4/4
Shar's exact #81 untreated 4/4 listing provides a current premium French option with a direct trained-luthier warning. It earns a lane only when the fitter wants that untreated stock, not because “de Luxe” predicts sound.
Avoid if: the premium label replaces an explanation of geometry and service.
Alternative: Despiau V10 A or fitter-selected stock already included in the labor quote.

Instrument identity
Label/maker, size, serial if present, current strings and ownership/rental status.
Reason for visit
Describe what happened and when; do not diagnose warping, fit or damage yourself.
Current bridge
Photograph it in place and ask the shop to record measurements and condition.
Proposed stock
Brand, model, grade/treatment, published width and why the fitter chose it.
Finished service
Labor scope, strings, follow-up, completion date, warranty and old-part return.
Read the total, not the blank
Split a bridge invoice into four honest costs

Close the service loop
Record what happens to the old bridge
- Photograph the bridge on the violin before shop intake without moving it.
- Ask the fitter to record whether it is being replaced, retained as reference or considered unsafe.
- Write the new blank code and finished-service date on the invoice, not on the bridge.
- Request the old bridge back in a labeled envelope unless a disposal agreement is documented.
- At collection, have the shop demonstrate normal handling and state when follow-up is due.
