The main types of guitar—and what changes under your hands
“Acoustic” and “electric” are only the first fork. Guitars also differ in top construction, strings, body depth, scale length, number of strings, pickup dependence and playing position. Those differences determine technique and practical use more reliably than genre labels.
Short answer: For a first guitar, choose the construction that serves the music and practice environment: nylon-string classical for classical or many fingerstyle traditions, steel-string flat-top for portable acoustic strumming and picking, or solid-body electric when amplified tone and lighter strings are central. Treat flamenco, archtop, hollow-body, resonator, twelve-string, baritone and extended-range designs as distinct tools rather than cosmetic variants.

Names overlap because they answer different questions
Body shape, construction and electronics are separate labels
“Dreadnought” describes a steel-string body shape, not every acoustic guitar. “Cutaway” describes access carved from the body near the upper frets. “Acoustic-electric” usually means an acoustic instrument with an installed pickup or microphone system; it does not become a solid-body electric. “Parlor,” “auditorium,” “jumbo” and similar terms describe size or shape, but dimensions vary among makers.
Likewise, a pickup does not reveal the acoustic structure. A hollow archtop and a solid-body electric may both have magnetic humbuckers while reacting very differently to the room and stage volume. Yamaha’s educational pages separate classical, acoustic and electric mechanisms for good reason: the vibrating top dominates one design while pickups and the amplifier chain dominate another.[2][4]
String type is a construction requirement
Do not put steel strings on a guitar designed for nylon strings or assume every metal-string instrument accepts the same gauge and tension. The top, bracing, bridge, nut, tuners and setup form a system. Use the maker’s specification or a qualified repairer, especially for an older, damaged or unidentified instrument.
Scale length changes feel but does not act alone
Scale length is the vibrating distance from nut to bridge saddle. At the same pitch and broadly comparable string construction, a longer scale generally requires more tension; real feel also depends on gauge, material, action, fretwork and setup. Baritone and extended-range guitars may combine scale, string and tuning choices that make a casual “longer is harder” verdict unhelpful.

Terms that describe different layers
Acoustic vs electric
Describes how the instrument makes performance-level sound. An acoustic-electric is still an acoustic guitar with an added pickup system.
Solid, hollow and semi-hollow
Describes body construction. It does not by itself predict one tone or genre.
Classical, flamenco and folk
Can describe traditions and design priorities. A teacher working in the target style can explain setup and technique differences better than a product tag.
Baritone, seven-string and extended range
Describe range, scale or added strings. They can be excellent second paths, but a beginner should confirm compatible teaching and repertoire.
Parlour, dreadnought, jumbo and orchestra models
Steel-string body-shape labels. Dimensions vary by maker, so compare measured body depth, lower bout and scale—not the name alone.
Travel and mini guitar
Marketing labels for smaller formats. Check scale, tuning, string tension and whether it is a full musical instrument rather than a toy.

Why these are more than unusual body shapes
Flamenco and classical
Both commonly use nylon-family strings and superficially similar outlines, but flamenco instruments and setups often prioritize immediate attack, rhythmic clarity and techniques that strike the top. A protective tapping plate is not decoration. A beginning classical student should not choose solely by a bright showroom sound; a flamenco student should ask a specialist about action, response and durability under the intended technique.
Archtop, hollow and semi-hollow
The Metropolitan Museum traces the American archtop’s carved top and back to violin-family construction ideas and Orville Gibson’s late-nineteenth-century work.[6] Modern “archtop” can refer to acoustic, pickup-equipped or heavily amplified instruments. A centre block distinguishes many semi-hollows from fully hollow models and changes weight, resonance and feedback behaviour.
Resonator and lap-oriented instruments
Resonator guitars transfer string vibration through a bridge to metal cones. Round-neck instruments may be fretted conventionally or used for slide; square-neck instruments are normally played horizontally with raised strings and a steel. Lap steel and pedal steel are related specialist families with their own tunings and techniques. Treating them as ordinary guitars with accessories leads to the wrong setup and teacher.
Baritone, twelve-string and extended range
A baritone guitar sits below standard guitar tuning but above or across some bass territory depending on tuning. Twelve-strings double courses for texture rather than adding six independent normal-range notes. Seven- and eight-string guitars add range, yet the wider fingerboard and muting demands affect even music written on the original six strings.

Where bass belongs in the map
Bass guitar is related, but it is not merely a lower guitar option
Electric bass shares frets, pickups, neck-and-body construction and some techniques with electric guitar. Its common four-string tuning corresponds to the lowest four guitar string names one octave lower, but the scale, string mass, spacing, amplification and ensemble function change the playing experience. Fender’s anatomy guide shows the familiar shared parts while treating bass as its own instrument category.[5]
A learner deciding between bass and guitar should ask which part they listen for. Bass commonly organizes the relationship between rhythm and harmony, works closely with drums, and may spend less time on six-string chord shapes. Guitar often supplies chord voicings, melodic figures and textures in a higher register. Both can lead, accompany or play solo; neither job description is absolute.

Can both shoulders remain neutral? Does the picking arm clear the body? Can the fretting hand reach first position without collapsing?
Setup
Check action, fret condition, nut slots, tuning stability and intonation with staff help. Setup can outweigh a wood or price label.
Dynamic response
Play one quiet and one firm passage. For electrics, keep amp and control settings constant while comparing.
Noise and household fit
Test real practice volume. “Unplugged electric” and “small acoustic” do not automatically mean neighbour-friendly.
A first-guitar decision
Choose the smallest system that lets you play the intended music
- Name the sound and role. Bring two or three recordings and identify whether the part is nylon-string, steel acoustic, amplified electric, slide, bass or another branch.
- Check the practice system. Electric guitar needs a safe amplifier or interface/headphone route; an acoustic guitar needs a room where its fixed physical volume is workable.
- Fit the instrument. Compare body depth, waist position, neck width, scale, weight and seated balance. A “smaller” outline can still have an awkward deep body or long reach.
- Inspect setup. Excessively high action, sharp fret ends, binding tuners or poor intonation can make a sound category feel harder than it is.
- Confirm teaching and repertoire. A teacher who understands the intended tradition is more valuable than a generic package of accessories.

Reserve budget for setup, correctly specified strings, stable stand or case, tuner and the exact signal-chain pieces the family needs. A guitar that arrives unplayable, cannot be amplified in the room, or has nowhere safe to live is not a bargain.
